Maine Senator Blocks NOAA Nominee Confirmation in Protest of Right Whale Rule Changes

Maine Senator Susan Collins rejected a unanimous consent request to confirm a top NOAA official, blocking Jainey Kumar Bavishi to be Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere.

The move is in response to the agency’s refusal to modify its Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan (ALWTRP) and regulations that have been put in place on the state’s lobster industry, which aim to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale species, per a release from Collins’ office...

In May 2021, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, White House National ...

Barramundi Group Reports Loss in Q1, Set to Begin Australia Expansion Funding in Q3

Singapore-based Barramundi Group reported a net profit loss of $5.9 million and a $1 million dip in revenue when compared to the same quarter in 2021.

The company adopted the full capitalization method for biological assets to come in line with other companies reporting methods in the seafood industry.

“The full capitalization method results in a higher cost of biological assets and will result in a higher cost ex-farm at the time of harvest. As in Q1 2022 production costs have been...

The End of Fish and Chips? Rising Prices Threaten a British Tradition

At west London's Hooked Fish and Chips, Bally Singh is struggling to keep the tills ringing for a British tradition, with prices sky-rocketing for fish, potatoes, cooking oil and even the flour used for the batter the dish is cooked in.

Cranking up their bubbling oil friers only to see customers stay at home, Singh and thousands of other normally thriving "chippies" across the island nation are navigating the economic fallout of the Ukraine war, the coronavirus pandemic and Brexit.

"Fish prices have gone up extortionately...

Nova Scotia Shrimp Trawler Returning to Port After Ice Encounter in Labrador Sea

A Mersey Seafoods shrimp trawler headed back toward its Nova Scotia base Thursday after suffering ice damage while fishing off the coast of Labrador earlier this week.

The bow of the 70-metre Mersey Phoenix struck ice. It caused a small crack that led to a small amount of water leaking into the ship.

Mersey Seafoods CEO Greg Simpson said the vessel, with a crew of 30 on board, is not in any danger.

The ship is en route to its home port of Country Harbour...

Southern California Ports Rank Dead Last on Global Efficiency Index

After a year of headlines lamenting a congested supply chain, areport ranking port efficiency  made it official: Southern California’s ports were the least efficient in 2021. The backlog of ships awaiting a berth in San Pedro Bay last year topped 100 — a threshold that didn’t consistently abate until Lunar New Year of 2022.

Released Wednesday, the second edition of the Container Port Performance Index, a collaboration between the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, ranked the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles in the last two...

Aging Salmon Hatcheries are Being Propped Up Despite Known Failures

The fish were on their way to be executed. One minute, they were swimming around a concrete pond. The next, they were being dumped onto a stainless steel table set on an incline. Hook-nosed and wide-eyed, they thrashed and thumped their way down the table toward an air-powered guillotine.

Hoses hanging from steel girders flushed blood through the grated metal floor. Hatchery workers in splattered chest waders gutted globs of bright orange eggs from the dead females and dropped them into buckets, then doused them first with...

OPINION: Managing Fish Stocks Shared by Nations Must Focus on the Impacts of Climate Change

The exploitation of marine species worsens when the fish stock is shared by countries as opposed to when it is contained within a single exclusive economic zone.

Shared fish stocks of hundreds of marine species  have been historically exploited by many countries across the world.

As oceans get warmer and marine species move across international borders toward waters with more favourable environmental conditions, these fish stocks face additional pressures, further challenging the achievement of international sustainability goals...
